The 5,000m races did not get started until around 8:50pm at night, but if we have any say about it, it was worth the wait. The excitement started off in the first heat where Stony Brook's Christina Melian ran 16:00.14, winning the 5,000m at the Terrier Classic. Melian's time places her among the top 10 NCAA Division II times this year so far. The stadium was electric as Melian crossed the line and fans waited for the official time to appear on BU's big screen. A huge sigh was let out as everyone discovered Melian just missed cracking the 16 minute mark. Melian put on an electric performance and Sisu looks forward to following Stony Brook through the rest of the season. If you know any collegiate runners (especially Stony Brook) visit Caitlyn Clark's photography page for some sweet photos of the ladies. (Clark's sister, Jane Clark, ran 2:52 in the 1,000m earlier in the evening - good enough to qualify for the ECAC Championship).
Back to the track for the remainder of the 5,000m - Wright and the Sisu crew had to wait two more heats before the Sisu blue could get onto the track. When the final heat did go off it was about 9:30pm in Boston - Wright started off in the back of the pack and clicked off 44 second laps, working her way up to second place and closing with a 39 second last lap. Whirlaway's Heather Mahoney finished first in the fourth heat with a time of 18:15.19. (Despite our photo above) Wright's official finishing time for the day was 18:37.25 - good enough to just earn her a spot at the BU Valentine Invitational.
Look out for more action on the track when more ladies and the men are back in two weekends! After that...it's #seeyouattheJONES.
