Mayor's Cup Recap
10/25/09
Today the most exciting Cross Country race of the year went off at Franklin Park in Boston. The Sisu Project put runnesr in both the men's and women's championship as well as the Franklin Park 5K. Alix Slayton made her cross country season debut and Laura Rudd posted a gutsy race in the women's 5K.
Mike Griffin pretty much solidified his place atop the individual standings in the New England Grand Prix. The men's team was short one runner and was not able to place in the championship race, however Jeff Bartlett and John Rheaume's performances in the Franklin Park 5K will count in the overall grand prix scoring. The Sisu Project races in the New England Championships on November 8th!
Double Victories at Wayland XC Festival
10/11/09
This sunday at the Wayland XC Challenge the Sisu Project Men's and Women's teams both brought home victory. The women were able to get together five runners for the first time this season and made quite a statement. A strong trifecta of Caitlyn Clark, Kristina Miner and Sumner Fletcher led the way. Laura Rudd ran almost a minute faster than last year and Suzanne Williams made a great XC debut right after singing the National Athem!
The men's lead in the overall standings was looking in jeopardy until a stronger than expected group arrived at Wayland High School. Lead by this year's grand prix leader, Mike Griffin, the Sisu Project seemed to have the perfect day as blue uniform after blue uniform rolled through the finish line. A big thank you goes out to Chris Keegan who ran his first race for SP!
Marathon Debut and More!
10/11/09
A trio of Sisu runners challenged the longer races recently and turned in some very impressive efforts.
Julie Collins made her marathon debut with a spectacular 3:21:02 at the ING Hartford Marathon. Julie finished 186th overall out of 2286 runners and earned 3rd place in her age group.
Tim Catoggio burned up the road at the BAA Half-marathon in 1:11:26 good for 23rd overall out of nearly 4000 runners and finally, Sumner Fletcher took FIRST PLACE among women at the Niantic Bay Half-Marathon in 1:24:22 good for 19th overall out of 510 runners.
Several more Sisu members will be running marathons in the coming weeks–we'll keep you posted!

Sisu Teams Runs Strong at XC Grand Prix Race #1
08/23/09
The men's team had a very strong showing behind the front running of Springfield College grad Mike Griffin who won the 5K race in 15:44. Both squads travelled to beautiful Burlington, Vermont where we were greeting with spectacular running weather to kick off the fall XC Grand Prix series. More details coming soon.

SISU Shines at Boston Marathon
04/20/09
Yesterday in the Boston Marathon we had four SISU members making their way from Hopkington to Boston: Marc Leblanc, Sumner Fletcher, Thomas Szumita, and our newest member Jonathan Towle. Each of them did an OUTSTANDING job!
Marc led the way with a huge PR, navigating the course in a BLISTERING time of 2:37:43!!! He was the 136th OVERALL!
Sumner never disappoints, she also PRed and SHATTERED the 3 hour barrier with an official time of 2:56:44, finishing as the 45th female!
Tommy Gun may not have run a PR, but was just shy of the 3 hour mark, and improved upon last years time. He finished in an official time of 3:00:13. Jonathan Towle is our newest team member, but he is not new to the marathon. He has run this marathon in the past for a charity, and if you were out there on the course you may have missed him because he was sporting the uniform of his charity, but had the SISU spirit for sure as he finished in a personal best of 4:43:45. Jonathan learned what most of us have already learned: Everyone PR's on the SISU Project!
Speaking of PR's Adam Malek has run 4 Straight PR's!
While everyone was spending weekends preparing for the Big Day in Boston, Adam has been chipping away on the track. He has PRed in the 10k, 5k, 2 mile, and 1500m in four consecutive weeks with respective times of 32:52, 15:33, 9:34, and 4:05. Keep it up!
Joe Catalano to Coach for SISU
04/6/09
Longtime local coach Joe Catalano has offered up his services to SISU. His storied career includes coaching on the High School, College, National and International level. He has coached several Olypians and American record holders and formerly coached for team NIKE. Welcome Joe!
Adam Malek Is On A Roll!
04/4/09
Adam has represented SISU well for the past 2 weekends in outdoor track action. At the Worcester City Meet on March 28th, Adam ran away from the field early en route to a 10K PR of 32:52. On April 4th, Adam laced up the spikes again and jumped in a 5K at the Fitchburg State College Invitation. Battling extremely strong winds and a very competitive field Adam placed 3rd with another PR of 15:33!

Shamrock Marathon, Virginia Beach, VA
Several SISU runners and friends traveled to Virginia Beach this weekend to witness true determination (SISU) in action. While some are content with dreams deferred, John Rheaume is not.
A little over 1 year ago John ran his first marathon in just under 4 hours. On March 21st, John blistered the asphalt in Virginia recording an inspirational 3:21:15. John's dream—Boston Marathon qualifier—is now only 10 minutes away!
National Masters Indoor Track and FIeld Championship, Landover, MD
The Indoor Nationals were hosted outside of Boston for the first time in 8 years and Jamie Aubuchon decided to make the trek to Maryland for his first ever indoor competition outside of New England. The trip was fruitful as Jamie placed first in the Men's 40+ Pentathlon. After a shaky start in the 60M Hurdles, Jamie recorded his best efforts since 2002 in the next three events; Long Jump (17-2), Shot (33-11), High Jump (5-2) to put him back in the medal hunt. In the final event, 1000M, Jamie ran 2:47.74 to move from bronze to gold.

USATF NE Indoor Championships and Road Race Grand Prix
02/22/09
There was lots of action this past sunday!
Another welcome and congrats to Corilynn Smith on her first 1/2 Marathon!
At the Indoor Track New England Championship we were well represented in a several events. Jamie Aubuchon (LJ, 800m), Suzanne Williams (1 mile, 800m), Matt Germain and Tim Cattagio (3k), Ryan Miller (5k, 3k), and Caitlyn Clark(5k). We had some quality performances too like Suzanne's PR in the mile which (correct me if I'm wrong) was good enough for All-American status for her age group!!
Thank you to Marc LeBlanc and Sumner Fletcher for representing us at the Grand Prix 10 miler! It was unfortunate that these events were all on the same day, but it is good to see we had some participants at both!
Road Grand Prix Series FYI: The men need 5 members to form a team for the New Bedford 1/2 Marathon and the women only need 3 (and no, Unfortunately they can't count co-ed together)!
For nearly all other Grand Prix Races both Men and Women will need 5 member teams. We'd love to see a team score at the 5k and 5 miler so if you are interested let us know, mark your calander, and plan ahead!
http://www.usatfne.org/road/gp.html
We will be sending out the rest of the Schedule as soon as we develop it. If any of you have races you would like to see more SISU members present at, please let Matt or Caitlyn know and we will see where everything fits in!
Recent Roundup

The indoor season is drawing to an end, but several Sisu runners have been burning up the indoor circuit. Jeff Bartlett has run a string of great mile races with a season best performance of 4:24.97 and 9:04.80 for 3K. Ryan Miller stormed through 3K in 8:52.37, Matt Germain blasted off 2:03.25, 4:30.63 and 8:49.22 for 800, Mile, 3K respectively. Caitlyn Clark also joined the fun with a quick 5:16.22 mile. Jamie Aubuchon competed in the Masters Mile at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games logging a 4:39.77, good for 6th place.
Several more great performances are expected soon as we will have athletes competing at the BU Valentines Meet (2/13-2/14), the USATFNE Championships (2/22) and the National Masters Championships (3/20-3/22).
SISU Project Goal Summit 2008 is a Success
12/31/08
Despite the inclement weather the Sisu Project's Annual New Year's Eve Goal summit was a tremendous success. Ten SP members gathered at Julie Collins place in Worcester ate incredible food and presented their goals for the New Year. The group also put into motion some exciting new plans for the team. It looks like 2009 is going to be a year of coming together and mutual support for SP. We cannot wait to get rolling!
New England XC Championships
11/09/08
The Woman's team put in their best performance of the year! Backed by some amazing performances from Alyssa, Sumner, Julie, Alix, Laura and Caitlyn the woman's team came in 5th. In only their second year racing the Sisu women showed up at every race, no questions asked and performed incredibly.
On the men's side, Sisu was blessed with two incredible performances. Tim Catoggio ran his first XC race of the year and put in a valiant effort. John Rheaume ran the fastest 10k of his life, nearly running back to back 5K PR's to do it.
Believe in yourself, believe in sisu, and believe that you are taking part in something positive magic will trickle down into all aspects of your life.
Mayor's Cup
10/25/08
The SP men and women both came to Franklin Park's prestigous Mayor's Cup ready to race. This was by far the most competitive race of the season. The team was spurred on by some spirited performances. Ryan Miller turned in his best race of the season with a blistering 25:50 over the 8 kilometer course. John Rheaume, running in his first ever, Mayor's Cup ran an 8K PR! The entire women's contingent of Alix, Julie, Suzanne, Laura and Caitlyn raced incredibly strong. They moved up as the race progressed and looked strong and steady the whole way! The New England Championships are in two weeks!
Topsfield Cross Country Festival
10/05/08
Sunday was a beautiful fall day in New England and it brought 11 members of the Sisu Project out to Bradley Palmer State Park for the Topsfield Cross Country Festival. Some great performances were turned in among the falling leaves and chilly air.
Caitlyn Clark finished fourth leading the SP women to a third place overall team finish. She was followed by Alyssa Brigham who was competing in her first ever team race for the Sisu Project. The women were strongly bolstered by efforts from Sumner Fletcher, Suzanne Williams and Laura Rudd.
The men's team finished fifth overall and went to the line with six members. Leading the charge was Ryan Miller with a ninth place finish overall. He was supported by Matthew Germain, Daniel Navaroli, Adam Malek, Jamie Aubuchon and John Rheume. The muddy sections were well bogged down from the preceding women's race and both Jamie and Matthew had to run the last mile in a sock! Talk about minimalist footwear!
This was the third race in the New England Cross Country Grand Prix. To track the team's progress visit http://www.nexcgrandprix.org.
The Sisu Project's next race is the Wayland XC Challenge on October 12th in Wayland MA.

Both members ran exceptional times for such an early start to the season. Caitlyn finished 4th with a franklin Park PR of 18:35, Alyssa finished 15th overall in the sea of talented females with a time of 19:24. A perfect start to a post collegiate career!

Dan Navaroli scorched the rolling hills of the Devens 5K course to post the fastest 2008 time while winning in 15:43! A great tune-up in the long wait between GP race #2 and #3.
Calahane Wins Sharon Triathlon in Close Finish
08/17/08
Pete Calahane may not have started strong, but good efficiency and a killer run helped him overcome an early deficit to win by just 11 seconds.
Coming out of the water from the 1/2 mile swim, Pete found himself way back in 57th place but efficient transitions and the 5th fastest bike leg (12.3 miles) gave him a chance to finish well. Suprising everyone except himself, Pete blistered the pavement on the 4.4 mile run in 23:55! – nearly 2 minutes faster than the next fastest athlete. This is a very strong solo race effort, never mind having already swam and biked.
Congratualtions Pete!

Some people continue to improve their fitness while others continue to improve their minds.
Suzanne Williams will be getting her USATF Level II coaching certification in July and Ryan Miller is currently attending the Kripalu Center to add "certified Yoga instructor" to his resume.
In running news, Dan Navaroli cruised to a strong 4th place finish last week at the Havard Fourth of July 5-M iler in 27:41 .
Huge 5K PR for Clark, Germain wins USATF-NE 5K & Calahane takes 5th in Granby Duathlon
06/15/08
Perfect late spring weather brought out some great performances this week. Triathlete Pete Calahane cruised to a 5th place finish in the Granby Charter Day Duathlon (2.5 run, 16 bike, 2.5 run). Pete went out very strong, but took a wrong turn (trail race) and lost about 6 minutes on the leaders, but then turned in the 3rd fastest bike time and the fastest second run split to move from 28th overall all the way up to 5th. Nice job Pete! The final winner was less than 6 minutes ahead of Pete.
On the track at the USATF-NE Championships, Caitlyn Clark continued her recent assault on PR's, this time hammering the 5K in 17:00.32. Sisu teamate Laura Rudd also turned in a 5K PR, running 20:58.59.
On the men's side Matt Germain, inspired by Clark's determination, won the 5K in an impressive 15:17.36. Ryan Miller followed close behind running a season best time of 15:58.63.
Masters athlete, Jamie Aubuchon, placed 3rd in the 400M hurdles (63.6) and Discus (102-8).
May Round-up
06/10/08
We've had some incredible performances from several team members recently that deserve recognition!
I'm sure by now you all heard about Jeff Bartlett's assault on the 4 minute barrier in the 1500. He finished off his collegiate career with a 3:58 busting down that wall! After all the bumps in the road this young man had—what a perfect demonstration of SISU. Now that he is graduated, he can officially start posting some times for us!
Matthew Germain, Tim Cattogio, Caitlyn Clark, and John Rheaume took our SISU to downtown Haverhill at the Baldi River 5 miler. Each came home with the famous juice mugs to show for their efforts. Matthew and Tim took 2nd and 3rd overall, and 1st and 2nd in their age group (26:24, 26:48 respectively), John set a new PR (33:13) and easily won his weight division by finishing nearly 6 MINUTES ahead of the next competitor! Caitlyn came out with an overall first place, a PR, and a new course record with 29:24!
More impressively, if you've checked the forum, you may have also noticed that we had two members compete in the Keybank Vermont City marathon. Marc Leblanc finished an impressive 15th overall with a time of 2:40.52! Sumner Fletcher (the same Sumner Fletcher who ran the Boston Marathon, and Travs Trail race) Placed 10th female overall, and was just 40 seconds shy of running under 3:00!
Sumner decided not to stop there. She showed up with team spirit at the Rhody 5k the weekend directly following her Marathon. The mens and womens races were separate. Sumner and Caitlyn represented SISU in the womens race. Sumner ran 20:16 seconds finishing 54th, and Caitlyn ran 17:38 seconds finishing 4th and moving into 5th in the Grand Prix series. Ryan Miller and John Rheaume were also at the race running 16:27, and 21:15 respectively. There was a lot of cooperation and team work involved in this race and it was a great experience.

Pete Calahane Wins Lion's Club Sprint Triathlon
05/18/08
SP running team member and multisport machine Pete Cahalane took home the individual title at the Lion's Club Sprint Tri in Marlboro, MA. Pete says he lost time in the pool but made it up on the bike and closed with a 17:30 5K!
Not to be outdone, the Sisu Triathlon Team of Adam Malek, Corey Davis and Matt Germain tried their hand at multi-sport and came away with and effort nothing short of spectacular winning first place. Corey put in a such a great effort in the pool. He came out sprinting. No one else seemed as motivated to pass the chip to their bike leg! Matt rode the bike leg...his first experience racing a bike in 11 years and handed off to Adam Malek...who turned in one of the fastest running legs of the day bringing the team home to victory.
Sisu Women Dominate Trav's Trail Race!
05/18/08
What a great day!
At the Travs trail run (3 miles) in Newburyport. Laura Rudd, Sumner Fletcher, and Caitlyn Clark took on the challenging course. This was a very competitive race with 264 participants. All three placed in the top ten for women (Laura 10th, 21:03; Sumner 6th, 19:15; Caitlyn 2nd, 17:33).
Congratulations to Sumner on graduating from UVM! She chose running on her graduation day instead of walking... with all the prizes and raffles at this nike sponsored event (cool mugs, hats, bags, gift certificates, money etc.) Who could blame her!

Spring Track is Finally Here!
03/29/08
First of all, we would like to welcome our newest Sisu member John Rheaume. John recently won the An Cú Liath Irish Pub race in Worecster. Congratulations and Welcome!
Several Sisu runners have started their track seasons early by hunting down open meets that haven't been snowed out.
Worcester City Meet: Many SISU Project members were present at the Worcester City Meet held at WPI. It was a windy, and snowy start to the day when Adam Malek kicked off the afternoon by placing 4th in the 1500 with a time of 4:21. Malek had high expectations of himself and returned to the starting line later for the 5000 meters with SISU members Louis Cote and Matthew Germain to show his true competitive spirit. He finished 3rd with a time of 16:17 and was closely followed by Cote and Germain who finished 5th and 6th respectively.
Caitlyn Clark also raced the 5000 that day adding another Worcester City title to her resume. She was able to run a PR of 17:43, a huge improvement of her previous best of 18:25.
RPI Meet:
On the same day, SISU Member Jeff Bartlett competed for Springfield at a meet held by RPI. Bartlett started off his season with a double in the 1500 and 800 clocking at 4:15, and 2:10. A great effort on a windy day, and an excellent start to the outdoor season!
USATF-Masters National Championships
03/29-31/08
Masters athletes Suzanne Williams and Jamie Aubuchon represented the Sisu Project well at the Masters National Indoor Championship hosted at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury Massachusetts.
Jamie Aubuchon turned in a strong Pentathlon (60MHH, LJ, Shot, HJ, 1000M) effort on Friday, scoring 2933 points to place 4th. Suzanne Williams followed up on Saturday taking home the bronze medal in the mile in 6:03.57 and also grabbed a 4th place finish in the 800M (2:41.81) on Sunday.
USATF-NE Open Championships
02/23/08
What a positive day yesterday. SP was out in full force at the USATF New England Indoor Championship. We certainly were the talk of the meet.
Sumner Fletcher in her first appearance as a member of the Sisu Project won the women's 5000 (18:16.65) with Laura Rudd finishing second (21:05.84) among club teams! Caitlyn Clark's victory in the women's mile (5:02.57) was inspiring. The Sisu Project can now boast two New England Champions and more importantly both of them were thrilled to be at the meet running for themselves as well as the Sisu Project. Suzanne Williams and Sumner also competed in the mile (6:01.33 and 5:39.53 respectively) and picked up team points. The duo of Suzanne and Sumner toed the line once again in the 800 meters (2:43.05 and 2:40.70 respectively) and it was just magical to watch them have such strong performances! This was Sumner's third race of the day making her an official Sisu Project superhero! Caitlyn doubled up in the 3000 meters where she finished a strong fifth (10:50.03)! Everyone left the track on sunday aware they were part of something special :)
After a two month layoff from competition, Jamie Aubuchon hopped into the Long Jump (17-3.5, a tune-up for the Master's Pentathlon next month) and then stepped on the track for an 800M, running a solid 2:05.41! Adam Malek competed in the mile (4:46.77) rounding out a fantastic season of multiple PR's for him! Matt Germain participated in the 5000 (15:40.53) and was spurred on by the phenomenal support everyone gave in such a competitive heat.
We especially want to thank our fantastic fans! Yvonne, Tiffany, Julie Paradis and Ryan all came out to support SP at this event. Their positive support fueled every one of our performances. The approach we take to this sport is starting to be recognized by anyone who comes in contact with us and I encourage you to use this to let your light shine in everything you want to accomplish.
In College DIII Championship action, Alyssa Brigham and Jeff Bartlett competed for Springfield College. Alyssa tripled with a 1200M leg of the DMR (3:47), followed by a 5:21 Mile, and then a 2:29 leg of the 4x800. Jeff Doubled... did the 1000m in 2:35 (2nd best) and did a 2:05 leg of the DMR.

On Saturday, February 2, at the USM Coed Invitational Adam Malek ran the 3k and placed second overall in 9:07. He was first among college runners. Meanwhile, Alyssa Brigham kept busy at the Tufts University Invite #2. She ran the 1 mile in 5:23.3, 1000m in 3:11.8, and also ran a leg of her teams Distance Medly Relay.
On Sunday February 3, Dan Navaroli jumped in the Log Cabin 10k (a hilly out and back course) to get a workout in. Although his intention was not to race he still ran an unofficial time of 37:35, which would have been good enough for 2nd place.
